I have a custom resource I created based on Matins. Mostly, I've simply added more hymns, the introit, and additional readings. However, when I create a service based on this liturgy, the Opening Versicles are missing. Yet, when I go to "My Liturgies" to check this resource, the Opening Versicles are there. Not sure why they would be missing when I create a service. Anyone have any thoughts?

Once again I am trying to use the Verse for Lent and I am being told that I do not have permission to use it. Had this problem last year - just printed it and removed the "Permission Not Obtained" notice and replaced it with the license number.

My licensing is up to date. I have checked for updates and there are none to be had.

Attempting to put together a service using Matins. Following the Scripture Readings, the heading appears for "Responsory" but there is nothing there.

The workaround is to hit "Insert" then browse through Matins and re-insert the Common Responsory. However, when I do that, I get the little yellow warning triangle that says "This element is usually omitted during the season of Advent."

I have not been able to find ANY resource that says that the Responsory is to be omitted during Advent (including several individuals who worked on the "Lutheran Service Book"). I think this is just an error in coding - especially since the Common Responsory is omitted in Vespers during Advent. There is an Advent-specific Responsory for Vespers (but not Matins - there is an Easter-specific Responsory in Matins that does not appear in Vespers).

I'm running 2.3.1.26192. (Checked for updates before posting this - there weren't any.)

There is the export/import option in Builder under the File menu. Templates and entire services can be saved in this way and opened on other machines. Hopefully this works for what you have in mind.

This hymn, like other hymns that have more verses than are in the staves is only sliced to include the verses which appear in the print edition of the hymnal in the staves. Perhaps future editions will provide more options for including extra verses in with the originals.
Thanks for your question and sorry it is not much of a solution.

In preparation for a wedding, I wanted to use the wedding stanza of 922 Go My Children, with My Blessing. However, when this comes up in Builder, it does not insert the wedding stanza in the middle of the song but instead puts it at the end as text only, while leaving stanza 4 with the music. The only workaround I've come up with is printing up only stanza 1 with music, and then switching to text only and manually inserting stanzas 5 and 4. I would like to be able to export them all with music, though, since there are only three stanzas. Can you help me with this?

Thanks!

Redford,

Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. After testing the software using both Word 2003 and Word 2007, I believe we were able to duplicate your observations regarding the “phantom data” that was being printed. To duplicate this, we saved our Bulletin as “Letter, Full” under the layout in both versions of Word. We then changed the page layout in Word to make a bulletin, making sure it looked good. However, when we printed it there were Hymn numbers, Scripture references, and LSB page numbers exactly like you described. We also saved the Bulletin as “Letter, Folded” in Lutheran Service Builder in both versions of Word. We reviewed the documents on screen, seeing no errors, and printed them. Both documents printed off as expected with no errors.

After testing other options, and changing the settings in Word, it is our observation that the “Right Justified – Sub-Categories” are what are creating the issue. If this is what you are experiencing, this can be verified in several ways:

1. All of the issues occur in the right column of the printed document.
2. They should all be directly across a “bold faced” heading (e.g. Kyrie)
3. The issues should all be “italicized” (e.g. LSB 186)
4. The right edge (or last letter/number) of the intrusion should vertically be the same.

The good news is that there are several ways to resolve this issue.

The simplest would be to edit the way the Bulletin is printed following these steps:

1. Entering the “Edit Bulletin” screen.
2. Clicking the furthest right icon in the tool bar that says “Layout”.
3. In the option of “Paper Size”, select “Letter/Folded”.
4. This will automatically readjust the location of the sub-heading.

Another option would be to follow these steps:

1. Entering the “Edit Bulletin” screen.
2. Right-Clicking anywhere where there is a sub-category (e.g. hymns, kyrie, readings).
3. Click “Edit Subcaption”, and delete the Subcaption.

The final option is following these steps:

1. Entering the “Edit Bulletin” Screen.
2. Click on “Format”.
3. Readings
a. Caption Select: Holy Gospel: John 8:31-36
b. Default Subcaption: Delete the information in the fill-box
4. Liturgy
a. Caption Select: Agnus Dei: Agnus Dei
b. Default Subcaption: Delete the information in the fill-box
5. Hymns
a. Caption Select: Opening Hymn: 655 Lord,…
b. Default Subcaption: Delete the information in the fill-box
6. Propers
a. Caption Select: Collect of the Day: Collect
b. Default Subcaption: Delete the information in the fill-box
7. Click “Ok”, and your changes should be saved, eliminating the problem.

These should solve the issues that you brought to our attention. If you have any other issues, feel free to comment back.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.

Blessings on your service,

Rick, you're absolutely right about the Word bookfold issue. Unfortunately, that's a glitch in Word!

But the bits of text are very strange and puzzling. Redford, would you mind sending me a screenshot of what you're experiencing? You can email me (if you click next to my name where it says "LSB Developer" you should be able to see my email address).

Thanks for bringing this up. This is an artifact of the program that appears when a user would like to put the melody of a song in with a song that has more than 4/5 verses that typically fall in the musical staff. Unless there are verses included which fall within the music staves, the program will leave the final staff before the verses. To prevent this staff from appearing, export the verses in text format rather than melody.
This has been reported to the repository of needed fixes.

Very strange, and I would agree based on what you've said that the problem resides in what's coming out of LSB, not the receiving document. That said, I'm at a loss to explain it.

I know this would be a hassle, but have you thought about completely uninstalling and reinstalling Builder? Also, by the sound of things, you have LSB 1 and LSB 2 installed on your machine. This is a shot in the dark, but I wonder if there's some strange interaction happening between the two (mixed up databases, or some such thing). I don't know enough about the file structures and programming to know one way or another. But perhaps removing LSB 1 would help. Like I said, a shot in the dark.

Again, wish I could be of more help.

Rick, thank you for your response. I have had the random bits both when creating from scratch and trying to update an existing file.

It seems to have more to do with pasting in parts of the service taken from LSBuilder more so than the receiving document. It presents whether I go through LSB then create a bulletin through the software or if I simply use the copy/paste feature within the LSB for a specific bit.

It does not make a difference if I use LSB 2.3.1.26192 or LSB 1.09 Build 2.

As to the first issue on the musical images, I think you've run into the Word 2007/2010 Book Fold problem, and you've also identified the workaround: save your services files in Word 97-2003 format. That should eliminate issues with any inline shapes (like music images).

As to the second issue, the random bits of text, I'd need the file to make anything more than a guess. A question that comes to mind is this: Are you creating your Word documents from a new, blank document, or are you importing your LSB output to an existing file where you erase the existing service and paste in the new one?

If you're creating new file, then I wonder if you have a tab stop that goes beyond the margin in some of your paragraphs. That could cause text to appear on a different page in Book Fold mode, and may be why you cannot erase it. However, it wouldn't explain why you're getting unrelated hymn information in your file.

If you're using an existing file, is it possible that not everything got erased from the existing file (like random hymn data)? It's just a thought.

I wish I could be more help. Hope you get things resolved soon.

This only happens when I use content from LSB and work it into a Word document. In Word 2007 it is a nightmare.

In Word 2003 a little less so, but still have phantom data printing.

It does not matter if I have LSB create the bulletin or use the copy/paste feature into an existing document.

Here's what it does - in Word 2007 any bits of text that are near or with musical images loses it's placement. Looks fine on the screen but prints all the way over on the far edge of the opposite (printing) page. So on an 8 page document text from page 2 would show up on page 7 at the far side. The only way I can get it to stay put on page 2 is to insert it into a text box, and depending upon the format in the section it isn't always an option.

So I save it to Word 2003. Now the text stays where it is on the screen image, but there are phantom random bits that show up which are NOT anywhere in the document. For example - a hymn reference for a hymn not chosen, nor listed, nor added. Plus it's outside the margin of the page, does not show up anywhere on the screen image, there's no coding that appears and all attempts to delete even a significant portion of the section do not affect it. It does not move up nor down and is not able to be chosen.

Having to continually build services one piece at a time to a completely fresh document to avoid these things is cumbersome, time consuming and expensive (I get paid by the hour).

Why is it doing this and how do we get it to stop? We've dealt with this even in the previous version of LSB (I have both versions, most recent releases).

Thank you for your help.

Hymn 439 (O Dearest Jesus, What Law Hast Thou Broken), when you deselect stanzas 1-5, only the last line of the music appears. I have tried this from within a service and from the Home page "Search", with the results the same. (version 2.3.1.26192)

I ran into the same problem, as did my secretary. Quick fix (hopefully) - went to "Tools" and "Renew annual subscriptions.." and then renewed online. This immediately took care of the problem.
