Installation fails when installing SQL Server 2008 Express
From LSB Documentation
Lutheran Service Builder version 2 requires the presence of an instance of SQL Server 2008 onto which it may install and maintain its databases and store your created services, elements, and other information. By default, the Lutheran Service Builder 2 Installer will scan your system for the presence of SQL Server 2008 Express. If it is not found, the Installer will attempt to install it automatically.
Because it is required for installation of Lutheran Service Builder 2, if the installation of SQL Server 2008 Express fails, the Lutheran Service Builder 2 Installer will likewise fail. This failure will usually result in the following error message:

This article is intended to assist users in overcoming SQL Server 2008 installation difficulties in order to complete the installation of Lutheran Service Builder 2.
Please make sure you are logged in as an administrator before you perform the following actions.
Options for Installation
There are two options if SQL installation fails on a local machine:
- Make changes to that system and install SQL Server 2008 separately, or
- Use a SQL Server instance elsewhere on your network.
This article covers troubleshooting and suggested steps for the first option. For help with the second option, please see the article Installing Lutheran Service Builder 2.x for Advanced Users.
Step One: Download the Microsoft Installation Package
The first step is to download the installation package for your system directly from Microsoft. You can find the download page for SQL Server 2008 Express at this link:
Please read the instructions on the Microsoft download page to direct you to the installation package appropriate for your computer.
For installation steps when running this installer, please see the article titled Installing SQL Server 2008 Express.
If installation continues to fail, please continue to the next step.
Step Two: Check for Previously Installed SQL Server Instances
If the installation continues to fail, it is possible that you have a previously installed version of SQL Server on your computer.
Open the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel. (On Vista, this is called Programs and Features.)
Search for anything in that installed programs list that is labeled Microsoft SQL Server. The installed version may be a year other than 2008.
| Please make sure you do not have other programs installed that require the use of SQL Server! If so, you may need to check with the vendor(s) of those products to obtain an upgraded version that will work with SQL Server 2008. We cannot be held responsible for loss of data incurred by uninstalling a SQL Server instance! |
If the version you have currently installed is SQL Server 2008 or a variant thereof, it is possible you can still install Lutheran Service Builder 2 without needing to run the full installation. You will need to download the latest MSI for Lutheran Service Builder 2 - instructions on downloading that file and a link to it are in the Installing Lutheran Service Builder 2.x for Advanced Users article.
If the version listed is an earlier version, and you are certain that you have no other programs installed that require the use of that version of SQL Server, then you should uninstall that earlier version of SQL Server, as it may be interfering with your installation of SQL Server 2008 Express.
Attempt the installation again. If it still does not work, proceed to the next step.
Step Three: Check the Task Manager for Running SQL Server Instances
Now, we want to check and make sure that there's not a version of SQL Server running that's not showing up in the Add/Remove Programs interface.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Task Manager. If you are presented with a window that has a series of buttons instead, then please click the one labeled "Task Manager".
The Task Manager will appear. Click on the tab labeled Processes.
Search the list of running processes (the names are on the left) for anything with the letters "sql" in sequence. If you see one, then click on it and then click the button marked "End Process". If you don't see a process with "sql" in the name, you may want to check the box labeled Show processes from all users, then check again.
Once you have successfully ended any processes that appear there, please attempt to install SQL Server 2008 again. If that installation fails, please continue to the next step.
Step Four: Check the Services Panel for Running SQL Server Instances
Now, let's check one more area of your computer to discover any SQL Server services that might be running in the background on your computer.
Through the Start menu, click on Control Panel. In the Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools.
Now, double-click on Services. This will bring up a list of the background services that are currently running on your computer.
| Do not stop any services other than the ones discussed in this article. Doing so can cause undesirable operation of your computer. |
Look through the list of services for any services labeled SQL Server or SQL. If you find one, check its status. If it is Started, right-click on the service name and then click on the Stop command. The service's status should switch to Stopped.
Once all services related to SQL Server have been stopped, attempt the installation again. If that fails, please continue to the next step.
Step Five: Submit a Support Request with a Log File
When the Microsoft SQL Server installation package fails, you will be presented with an error message. This error message will likely refer to a file named install.log and will give you the path to that file on your computer. Please find that file.
Once you have found the file, visit our Support Request page and paste the text of that file into the details box. Fill out the rest of the form and click Submit. Our technicians will be informed of the problem and will get back to you with additional advice.
